British Aikido Board


The National Governing Body for Aikido in the United Kingdom.
Aikido is a martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba, that focuses on harmonising with your opponent, it can be practised as a sport, self defence and an art using hand to hand and japanese weapons.

Welcome to the British Aikido Board

The British Aikido Board seeks to:-

  • Represent the majority of bona fide organisations practicing aikido in the United Kingdom.
  • Support, encourage and promote the highest standards of aikido within an environment of mutual respect for offering styles practiced.
  • Raise awareness of the value of aikido not only as a contributor towards healthy living, but also in the development of adults, young people and children, without regard to race, gender or creed.

The British Aikido Board operates primarily through its member Associations. There are 49 currently Full Member Associations with 1 Associate and Probationary Member Associations of regional and national status, who each retain their independence, both technically and financially, with a combined membership of some 5,000 , which includes 1224 instructors holding current Coaching Awards.

The Board is recognised by Sport England , as the only governing body for aikido in the United Kingdom and is a member of the Sport and Recreation Alliance.

 

The Board seeks to further the advancement of all styles of aikido and to establish and monitor standards of safety and behaviour for practitioners of aikido.

The Board advises member Associations on all relevant UK and European legislation and procedures and develops appropriate policies and codes of practice.

Other services provided include:-
•  Insurance cover, for members, instructors and Associations.
•  Promotion of a Nationally recognised Coaching Scheme in conjunction with UK Coaching / Sport England.
•  Organising a National Courses.
•  Supporting initiatives to encourage the teaching of Aikido in schools.
•  Publishing Newsletters and specialist information bulletins eg. Safeguarding and Coaching.

The Board has completed a number of initiatives, arising from the work of their major Governance Audit and through the adoption of a wide range of recommendations, contained in their Aikido Development Plan will support their key objective of encouraging all Aikido groups to join together under this “Aikido umbrella”.

Coronavirus Guidance  – Update 10th September 2020

  1.  We have received the following information from the Sport and Recreation Alliance

Following the recent announcement from government on reduction of group sizes in social circles, the Sport and Recreation Alliance has been in direct contact with colleagues at Sport England, UK Sport and DCMS to clarify the impact on our sector.

We understand this news may have caused confusion and anxiety with you and your participants and many of you have been in touch to ask what this news means for your activity.
After a day of dialogue and consultation, we are pleased to have received an update from Sport England which provides a little more detail on the return of sport and physical activity.

While social gatherings of more than six people will be banned in England from 14 September, the government has confirmed that organised sports and activities that have been through return to play protocols can continue, as can organised outdoor sports and physical activity.

2. The BAB has appointed regional Covid-19 Officer at our Executive Meeting on the 5th September 2020

It was agreed that the 4 nations should each have a nominated BAB Covid-19 Officer who will check on all local requirement and advise the Overall UK Officer.

The 4 appointees are:
Steve Billett for England and Overall UK Officer
Miguel Serra for Scotland
Dave Carleton for Northern Ireland
Michael Williams for Wales

Steve Billett will continue to keep in contact with Sport England and the Sport & Recreation Alliance and will liaise on behalf of the BAB where necessary.

3. Steve Billett has been in direct contact with Sport England and they were advised that BAB organised Aikido will continue based upon our Published Guidelines and Supplements. They have NOT advised the BAB that we should cease, also based upon the Sport & Recreation Alliance update and the latest information stated today (10th September 2020) in parliament by Mat Hanock that organised sport should continue.

Although social bubbles are limited to 6 people, We confirm that as long as BAB Clubs are following our Guidance Documents that they can continue to teach or reopen a class using our class pod sizes up 15 members.
